We are proud to announce that the Sauvie Island Center, an established farm-based education non-profit organization, moved all programming to our farm this spring. Since their founding in 2005, the Sauvie Island Center has operated on the grounds of Metro’s Howell Territorial Park and the Sauvie Island Growers (formerly Sauvie Island Organics) farm.

Visitors to the new Sauvie Island Center at Topaz Farm will find inventive, engaging farm-based learning opportunities alongside the best of the Center’s existing curriculum. Long term collaborative plans include:

·       an acre-sized “bee wheel “ filled with “spokes” of native, pollinator-friendly plants blooming seasonally;
·       a Discovery Garden/Food Forest (formerly the Grow Lunch Garden) planted and harvested by students;
·       an educational worm and compost operation;
·       a turtle habitat restoration project;
·       a community-driven effort to build bird and bat houses around the farm.

The Sauvie Island Center will host summer camps, family farm days and educational farm field trips beginning in May of 2020.

“We are humbled by Kat and Jim’s incredibly generous offer to host our programming. Not only are they donating 3 acres of farm land to our program, they are providing rent free office and storage space.  When we met with Kat and Jim we knew immediately that their vision for Topaz Farm was something that we wanted to be a part of,” said Joanne Lazo, Executive Director of the Sauvie Island Center.

The feeling is mutual!
